When holding a special event that requires a Special Occasion Permit, remember your obligations and responsibilities are the same as a Licensee:
Sell and serve only beverage alcohol bought under your permit at the LCBO, the Beer Store or Ontario wineries/breweries.
- Check photo ID of people you suspect are less than 19 years of age. It is illegal to serve beverage alcohol to minors or allow
them to consume beverage alcohol at a permit event.
- You must offer your guests food, as well as a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.
- Encourage responsible drinking, and don't serve any guest to the point of intoxication. You can be held liable for the actions
of an intoxicated guest.
- Do not allow guests to drink and drive. Arrange for safe transportation.
- Make sure the facility meets health and safety requirements, and that the number of people at the event is within the lawful capacity
of the premises.
- You are required to post the permit and the levy receipts at the location where the event is being held.
- Assign a trained staff member to monitor the door, and have enough security staff on hand to avoid problems. Train all your
staff in responsible serving practices by having them take the Smart Serve program. Call (416) 695-8737 or toll free 1-877-620-6082
for more information.
