- Who is Smart Serve?
- Smart Serve Ontario, a division of the Hospitality Industry Training Organization of Ontario, is a non-profit organization
dedicated to developing and delivering information and training on responsible service for all individuals who serve alcoholic beverages
or work where alcoholic beverages are sold or served in the province of Ontario.

- Smart Serve Online is the same responsible alcohol beverage service video based training program developed by Smart Serve
Ontario, except you take it online. The program is designed to promote responsible alcohol beverage service. Smart Serve is
comprehensive and user friendly.

- This program is for servers, bartenders, door staff, security, golf course marshals, managers, licensees, or anyone who
will be working in areas where alcohol is sold and served under a Liquor Sales Licence or a Special Occasion Permit.

- How is the course organized?
The course has four modules which together make up the Smart Serve Online Training Program:
- Module 1: The Effects of Alcohol
- Module 2-A: Legal Issues
- Module 2-B: Civil Liability
- Module 3: Maintaining a Safe and Enjoyable Atmosphere
- Module 4: House Policies and Risk Assessment
- Appendix I: LLA and Negligence Cases
- Appendix II: Occupiers' Liability Act Cases
Each module is accompanied by Smart Serve training video clips that have been designed to support the course content. You will
need to have a Windows Media(tm) and Flash Player 6 installed on the computer. This will allow you to view the videos and
animations. If you need to download the free and necessary software, you will be provided with step by step instructions, after you
register.

- How does the final test work?
You will be able to review the course material before you write the final test.
Once you submit the final test you will be notified immediately about your results. If you pass a certificate number will be
generated. The pin and official certificate may take 3 to 6 weeks for delivery. Make sure you print a copy of the online
certificate for your own records.
If you have not passed, you will be given immediate feedback from the test system and the opportunity to re-take the test. It is
also recommended that you review the Smart Serve Training Program before you re-take the test.
Only one re-take is allowed. Additional re-takes will require that you purchase a new enrollment in the Online program.

- How do I register?
- You will need a major credit card.
- Once you have purchased the Online Training you will be issued a Token Number. This will allow you to register and access the
course for 30 days.
- As with the video based training, the length of the program is about 3 hours in total.
- You don't have to complete the course in one sitting, you will have the freedom to proceed at your own pace.
Any organization can purchase the online training for their staff, students, or volunteers. As an organization you will be able
to purchase multiple enrollment tokens. For every token you purchase you will receive a registration number.

- Can I watch the video at my place of employment but do the test online?
If taking the Online Training Program, you must go through the entire program including watching the video clips and
doing the quizzes, before you can take the online test. If you choose to do the video/workbook method then you must write the
paper-based test and mail it in to our office for processing.

- How do I get a user name and password?
You were given a token number when you purchased and paid for the package. You need to redeem that token by going
back to the Online training tab and going to Step 3. You will assign the system a password and the system will assign a user name
for you, you than need to take those two pieces of information and use them to login.

- I've put in the user name given, but it still doesn't work?
Make sure that you type in (first name)(last name). That is, type in your first name followed by last name without
a space in between.
Captitalization only matters with your password.

- Why is the system telling me that I have an invalid token?
You have already redeemed your token and registered for the course. You can't redeem the same token twice.
We have emailed you your user name and password, please take those two pieces of information and log in on the left hand side of the
Online training tab.
