Program Overview
To provide a standard method of delivering a responsible service training certificate program to all individuals in the province of Ontario who serve or work where alcohol beverages are sold and served.
This program is for:
- servers, bartenders, managers, licensees
- door staff, security
- golf course marshals
- convention and special event planners
- anyone who is involved in an event where alcohol is served
Our program will also be of benefit to the owners and operators who rent their facilities for Special Events, such as:
- Banquet Halls
- Church Halls
- Bowling Alleys
- Arenas
- Municipal facilities
- Outdoor facilities
Smart Serve is a self-paced training program that can be delivered on an individual basis, or in a classroom setting.
Smart Serve covers topics such as:
- Facts about alcohol
- How alcohol works in the body
- Signs of intoxication
- Legal rights and responsibilities
- Civil liability
- Types of licences
- Prevention and intervention techniques
- House policies
- Risk assessment
Upon completion of the program – individuals will be aware of:
- their responsibilities and obligations under the law
- proactive approaches to preventing alcohol-related problems
- how to recognize signs of intoxication
- how to implement intervention strategies for aggressive customers
The delivery of the Smart Serve Training Program is available:
- Online (using the internet)
- Video/Workbook
1) Online (using the internet)
The Online training is designed to be taken entirely over the Internet. It is an alternative method of delivery to the Video/Workbook program. This method of training has been developed to satisfy the growing need for ease, flexibility and convenience.
2) Video Training Kit and Certification Kit (also available in French)
The Video/Workbook based program is suitable for individuals and group training. This method of delivery allows you to customize the training to suit your particular environment, and allow the opportunity for group discussion.
Both formats of training consist of four modules and Appendix.

The Delivery Process
- Video and text work together to provide information and knowledge on responsible service of alcohol.
- Throughout the Program there are exercises to reinforce the information.
- The text is designed to be supported by the video
- After each module you have the opportunity to complete the exercises and activities related to the topic of that module.
- Training time lasts approximately 2-3 hours depending on the trainee's pace.
- Training does not have to take place in one session
- At the conclusion of the Program a test consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions is completed.
- A minimum score of 80% is required to pass.
- Successful candidates receive a wallet size certificate and lapel pin.
- Scores below 80% are permitted one re-take test.
- It is recommended that the training material be reviewed prior to retaking the test.
THE TWO PROGRAMS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
If you register for the Online training you must complete the entire program online.
If you choose the Video/Workbook method you must write the paper test.
